WEATHER - Looks to be sunny and moderate on Saturday, highs in the upper 70's.
Rain passing through Sat night through Sunday afternoon. So some rain in most areas on at least part of Sunday. Given how dry the ground is, it doesn't look like enough to bring any rivers up.

RELEASES -
UPPER YOUGH - Look at last week's report for the treatise on the upper and lower operating band rules. Bottom line, look for the release Sat only.

LACKAWAXEN - (for the Lehigh die-hards this is the nearest local equivalent) Sat 10am-3pm about 1000 cfs Sometimes called the "Lack of Action" by certain creeking cognescenti.

GUNPOWDER GORGE - I'm not sure what is going on but it's now up to 340 cfs, which is a lot for a small narrow river with a minimum boatable of 100 cfs. It actually has a few decent surfing / play spots at this level. Before you go there, check the level Friday evening. The dam keepers seem to always be gone for the weekend so what it is at the 6pm reading is almost always what you'll get for the weekend

"NATURAL FLOW"
LOWER YOUGH - Expect ~ 1.4 ft for the weekend (and until we get some meaningful rain). There is a chance that they'll bump it to 1.6 for the weekend.

Lee's Pick of the Week - Gunpowder Gorge, especially if it holds at 340 cfs.

Dear Howard,

Thank you for your letter, I couldn’t agree more.  Having lived in the city for many years I am a big advocate of using the local merchants.  However, in this instance we were not able to utilize BMO.

We did reach out to Andy at Wildware until the eleventh hour just in case he could find a way to get Dicks’ canoe.  Unfortunately he could not.  We also gave them free sponsorship for the race for everything they have done for us in the past.

Yes, there are other shops in the general vicinity and yes we should have used them.  I think in the end it came down to convenience and time restraints on the member that was facilitating that purchase.

It is my understanding that when we approached Bass for the boat we asked them if they would like to be a sponsor for Kipona but they opted out as they were involved with the fishing tournament that weekend.  I am unaware of any sidebar agreement for recognition.

Moving forward and with better planning we will utilize the local outfitters.

Regards,

Alix Ascione

Earl,

Do you still have this canoe or have you sold it? Contemplating getting a canoe just to add to the collection.

You can go to KCCNY, some of their stuff is accurate, some is not so accurate. I'd rather use the direct link to Baltimore Army Corps of Engineers
http://www.nab-wc.usace.army.mil/northBranch.html  You can also send an e-mail to Barry Flickinger @ Balt ACE and ask to be put on their e-mail list. You will get that information before it is posted on the ACE web site.
If you go here
http://www.nab-wc.usace.army.mil/mapserver/index.html - you can click on reservoir plots or basin summaries. Whitewater boaters would mostly be interested in the Potomac Basin which has the Savage and North Branch. They will give you the same information that was previously discussed about the Lehigh. Rick B (the Lehigh Lion) seems to prefer the graphs. For instance if one (or both) of the reservoirs is nearly full and either there is a lot of inflow or heavy rain is coming - you can bet that there will soon be paddleable levels in either the Savage or North Branch as the case may be.
If you go back to last year, when I was planning on giving up the weekly report, I posted these links and how to use them in a do-it-yourself weekly river report.
If you remember the Lehigh discussion, there are some parallels hers but also some missing information. You can also note that ACE - Balt is "old school" they list the stored water in acre-feet rather than dsf. Remember that 1 dsf = 2 acre feet. Looking at this evening's Basin summary there are 11,000 acre feet stored and lets assume ~ 2000 acre foot minimum. That gives them 9,000 acre-ft to operate with - or 4500 dsf. There is essentially no inflow (1 cfs @ Barton) and they are releasing 125 cfs or 125 dsf/day. In a 20 day period they would release 2500 of that 4500 dsf, leaving them 2000 to play with. A Savage release of 6 hours (9am-3pm) at 1000 cfs would cost them 250 dsf out of the 2000. They can easily afford it. There will certainly be rain in the next 20 days so how much they will have left will be better than what I have calculated.
Hope this helps - Lee
PS one more post and I go over the limit and become a Class 5 poster. I may have to run silent for a while or come back under an assumed name.

I came across a pretty handy message board that contained most of the major East coast releases throughout the year. And while perusing it, I found out that there may be a Savage release at the end of the month!

Check it out.

What is the location of problem? What river or stream? There are many out there who can help but it would depend on location and circumstances. Remember, the State won an important case involving the Little Juniata River. Keep us informed.

I was going to try to stop in this weekend so I called to get their hours. They are closing for good TODAY at 9PM. They said stock is dwindling rapidly.
