Juniata River - Class I - Date: Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Juniata River  "kayaking"
It was a beautiful day on the Blue Juniata!
Moe, Tim, Tod and Jim paddled from Howe Park to Ken's Beach today.
The water level was about 4.03 feet at Newport.
The trip took about 3.5 hours.
The water temperature was about 28 degrees celsius.

This was about a 7 mile paddle.

Juniata
6/11/08
Moe, Todd, Jim Crownover and Your Humble Reporter

Well, that was an interesting float trip.  Notable events included:

-   Seeing more 18+ inch bass than I have ever seen in my life.  That is the total life-time number and not just in one trip.  I am bringing a fly rod next time.
-   Jim suckering me into wading into Poorman’s Spring.  I think I got permanent nerve damage from the brutally cold water.  It sure seemed colder than the usual 56 deg. ground water.  I am bringing a thermometer next time if I can still walk.
-   Moe saying “What is surfing?” and then surfing her brains out in waves that others in play-boats on previous trips avoided… in a 12 foot Pungo...  at the age of 70.  (Are you reading this Ricky?)
-   Watching Todd do an accidental stern squirt in his 10.5 foot Old Town Dirigo and not flipping.  Twice.  (See Jim’s excellent pictures at http://www.crownover.com/juniata20080611.html for a photo of his recovery.  Very cool.)
-   Watching Todd make a cell phone call to get permission from the Powers-that-be to buy a white water boat.  Stay tuned.  Todd needs a WW boat so if you happen to have a used one for sale …
-   Rolling the Orca.  It came right up even if my paddle dove a little.
-   Hunting for access to the ledges using Google Earth once I got home.  There has to be an easy way to get there without all that flatwater paddling.  It is better than the Dauphin Narrows. I am going back again but I am taking a WW boat.

Hey Tim!   You always told me how you liked the cold! You should have lain down in there.
Remember, I am the one who can’t take the cold!
Check out Poorman’s Spring here.

Let me know whenever you want to go again.
I am ready.

I HATE cold water.  That is why I wear neoprene in winter.  I didn't think I would need it when the air temp is in the upper 80's.

I hate shrinkage even more.

That was a blast!!
No baking cookies and sitting on the porch crocheting booties for me!!
Thanks for the fun.
