-The Winter pool sessions are for practicing and/or learning the Eskimo Roll and other safety aspects of Kayaking/Canoeing. They are held on Sunday afternoons at either the Boiling Springs High School or the Cumberland Valley High School Pools.
-You must be a Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg member to participate in the Pool sessions. You can join, or renew, using PayPal on the Club website: CCGHPA.com Be sure to get your Renewal in before the January sessions! If you are on Auto-Renewal you should be fine – just make sure your PayPal information is current so that it won’t bounce.
-The dates for the Boiling Springs Safety Sessions have been confirmed. They will be held at the Boiling Springs High Schoo. The setup will be basically the same as last year. Well behaved spectator members may attend and watch. The cost will be $5 per member, per session. There is no ACA Insurance fee or waiver required for the Boiling Springs Pool Sessions. The actual pool use times will be from 1-3 pm, however, we can use 1/2 hour before and after to get the boats in & out, change and clean up, like we did last year.
-The Cumberland Valley Safety Sessions have been tentatively scheduled, but the dates have not been officially approved. They will be held at the Cumberland Valley High School Pool. The time will probably be from 1 pm to 4 pm, but waiting on confirmation. The process should be the same as last year, with ACA Insurance involved. The Pool fee is $5 per member per session. The ACA Insurance fee is $5 per session unless you are an ACA member (must provide your ACA Number at sign-in), in which case there is no fee. Please print, fill out, sign and bring an ACA Waiver to the Sessions with you to save time during the sign-in process. There is no formal Instruction set up for these sessions, however, Club Instructors and other experienced paddlers are usually there and willing to help new people learn to roll. If you want help, don’t be shy, please ask someone that seems to come back up most of the time after tipping over & see if they’ll help.
The Club does have a limited number of Whitewater Kayaks (Including nylon skirt & paddle) and one Whitewater Canoe that can be made available to members for these training sessions. Reserving one, picking it up or arranging for delivery in advance, making sure it is clean, and getting it back to the Club after the session is the responsibility of the person requesting it.
Important Information We would ask that the following procedures be followed upon entering the pool area, before going to the locker rooms: 1. Carry boats and gear in just far enough to keep the doorway area clear 2. Remove outside footwear. The CV pool has a “No street shoes on deck” regulation, and it’s just courtesy to keep the Pool deck areas as clean as possible. 3. And then you can head to the locker rooms and then to the pool for what we hope will be an educational, safe and fun afternoon. Note: For the CV Pool Sessions, everyone in attendance must be a participant. The observation gallery (stands) are not open to us, and spectators are not permitted on this pool deck.
The following are some other regulations that we must adhere to when using these facilities:
– Before coming to the pool:
1. Join or Renew your CCGH membership. Renewing at the Pool Sessions is not usually available
2. Thoroughly clean all gear and boats, inside and out, including around/under flotation bags. We MUST keep the pool water clean, or we may lose the use of these facilities. The influx of Stink bugs in this area is an issue – please clean the boats right before each of the Pool sessions to make sure – they like to hide under the kayak seats.
3. Remove all knives from gear and leave them at home. Knives are NOT permitted on school grounds.
4. For the CV sessions, if you are an ACA member, have your card/member # with you, in order to waive the ACA fee.
5. Try to have exact change for the Pool fee and ACA fee, as available change for larger bills may be limited.
6. The pool is for paddlers and spotters only. No swimming or diving is permitted.
7. Stay OFF the movable bulkhead at the CV Pool
8. All children in attendance must be under adult supervision at all times.
9. Be aware and considerate of others around you. If the pool becomes too crowded, we reserve the right to set up a rotational system.
10. Be ready to offer the bow of your boat for a bow rescue to any fellow paddler whose roll didn’t quite work. There will be a life guard on duty, but we have a lot of people for them to watch, so working in pairs and making sure someone knows you’re attempting a roll is a good idea.
We hope these roll sessions will make our members more efficient and safer on the water, contributing to making future paddle trips more enjoyable than ever.
