Join us on Saturday April 20th for a trip on Sherman’s Creek in western “Purry” County. The rains are expected to be done in the morning and the temperatures will be in the comfortable 60’s. However, the water will be HIGH and FASTER than normal. At normal levels, there are 2 creek-wide ledges that make for a wet open kayak. These may be gone on Saturday. There should only be 1 portage around a low concrete bridge (although that might be under water too). Be prepared to get wet, muddy feet and please have dry clothes at the end to change into just in case wetness would occur. There will be a couple of spots where we will need to zig zag to get through, so again, please feel comfortable that you can maneuver your boat in the higher faster current.
We will meet at the put-in at 10:00 at Enslow Bridge (built 1904) ready to shuttle at 10:15 to the take-out at the Adair covered bridge. Once on the creek, we will paddle about 7 miles through farmland, hemlock, high banks, go under the Bistline Bridge (built 1871), and end at Adair’s bridge (originally built 1864). We will take a lunch stop and stretch our legs. This trip should take about 2.5 hours with the higher water including lunch.
To get to the put-in, find Rt 274 in Perry County. Take 274 west through Andersonburg. Go about 1.5 miles past Andersonburg and turn left onto Adams Grove Rd. (If you end up in Blaine-you’ve gone too far and you may hear “banjo” music.) The Enslow Bridge is approximately a mile on Adam’s Grove Rd. The address doesn’t really have a house number, but you could try 600 Adams Grove Rd, Blain, PA in your GPS. Please, either post on the message board or Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are coming so I can look for you. Call my (cell) 717-713-5562 if you get lost. Lisa
I am sorry to have to do this, but I am going to cancel this trip for tomorrow as the water is already very high and projected to go higher as well as local roads are flooded with water and debris. It’s just too dangerous to take a chance. In the future, I will try to arrange a pick up trip for this stretch when the water is at a reasonable level. Sorry for any inconvenience. Lisa
